Detective Pikachu: A Spoilerish Review

Long time no see readers. This may be a month late but, welcome to my second “Spoilerish” review where I review, analyze and spoil a movie that I happened to see and wanted to review. Today’s video is about Pokémon’s first ever live action film, Detective Pikachu.

Detective Pikachu like any video game film adaptation has a lot of problems, but that doesn’t disqualify it from being a good film. While these flaws are most apparent in the first third of the film, the movie improves as the story goes on. The second third, after Ryan Reynold’s Pikachu has been introduced, the film certainly picks up, becomes faster in pace and is a lot more enjoyable. The third act on the other hand feels pretty rushed and really bizarre, and to me I can’t tell if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. Opinions may vary. I liked it.

Justice Smith’s interpretation of the game character, Tim Goodman, is a huge improvement over the video game’s version of the character. In fact despite the movie’s short comings it still has a better story and mystery than the game it’s based on. While the game ends on a cliff hanger (it’ll soon get a sequel on the Nintendo Switch), the movie completes the story of Tim and Pikachu defeating the villain and reunites Tim with his father.

I give the film a GOOD rating! Certainly it is the best video game film that has ever been produced in like… well ever! For more details and a deeper analysis on the Detective Pikachu movie and game check out my video review down below. It would be very appreciated and thanks for reading!
